About
Celebrate Día de los Muertos by designing & creating a custom sugar skull in honor of a loved one, continuing the tradition of decorative skull art inspired by Mexican culture. We provide the materials; all you need to bring is your creativity (and maybe a smock if you're messy).
What is a Sugar Skull?
Sugar skulls, or "calaveras de azúcar," are a traditional symbol of the Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) celebrations in Mexico. These colorful, decorative skulls are traditionally made from sugar and are adorned with vibrant icing, representing the spirits of deceased loved ones. Painting sugar skulls is a popular activity during this time, allowing individuals to express their creativity while honoring their ancestors.
Workshop Details
The skulls we will decorate will not be made of sugar; instead, they are clay skulls handmade by a family near San Miguel de Allende in Mexico. You will be guided by our resident expert on traditional sugar skull designs and learn more about their significance in Mexican culture for Día de los Muertos. Then you can let your creativity shine! Paint & other decorative materials will be provided. Your completed masterpiece can be placed over a tea light to decorate your own ofrenda at home.
This is an adults-only class, and the cost is $30 per person.
